We can't advise you to anything illegal. You wouldn't be the first to run a cash-only business. While I'm sure it would work to a certain extent, there are many risks involved you would face. In particular things like what if your employees stole or damaged something? With a proper business setup you'd have courses of action open to you, such as insurance or being able to approach the police. This might be problematic if your business is not legal.

Hello, I am very interested in starting a house cleaning business in my college town with some other students. Can I run the business by cash only and pay myself and my employees "under the table?" I ask because having a cleaning business is not my lifetime goal, but I would like to do it while in school to help with finances.

Hi Chris. I think you are going to have to make some kind of an initial investment and come to some arrangement with the employee to pay them a bit more initially just to keep them. Another option is to find something else for that employee to do while you're waiting for more work to come in - like perhaps they could be dropping off flyers for you, or doing some cold-calling.

I'm in a catch 22 on my cleaning company start up. I am working a steady job on first shift and need employees for my cleaning service but have no clients yet either. If i hire one employee and then find a client to service that only gives my employee a max of 75 dollars a week. and i only get about 25 dollars a week from that. I'm geussing that the employee will probably not stay with my company for very long if no other clients or even one client a day on a regular basis is still only giving my employee the same amount as unemployment benifits pay him/her. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

your website was very helpful. What full services does Thoughtful systems provide and what are the costs? Are there any inclusive packages that include website design, search engine, management etc.

How much you should charge varies a lot depending on where you are. The best way to find out is to do a little spying and call some other cleaning companies nearby and find out what they're charging. You don't necessarily have to be the cheapest, but if you are more than one of the others you have to have your story down as to why customers should pay more for your service (ie better service, more reliable) ready for when customers ask.

Hi Cathy. You should set up a business (LLC or Corporation) for running your business. If you are going to be hiring employees you will probably need to fill out paperwork for this. Best to see an accountant and/or lawyer. The best thing about being a registered company is that you can get yourself insurance in case you break something (accidents can happen) in a customer's home, or in case you hurt yourself. Most cleaning companies do not get their customer's to sign contracts (it just takes too much time and hassle). What you might want to consider is that for the customer's first cleaning they must pay by credit card. This ensures you get your money in advance until they prove that they are a trustworthy client that you can rely on paying their bills. These days there are several easy ways to set up credit card processing. QuickBooks, for example has a credit card processing add-on you can get. Then you can let the customer switch to paying by check.

Alan: I think the startup costs can be very low, especially if you're going to be doing the cleaning yourself. A lot of these businesses end up succeeding, but I think to make a better go of it it's better to invest more initially. You'll at least need a web site and a phone. You should not use your home phone as it's a big turn-off for customers if kids answer it, etc. They can usually tell it's a home phone and that doesn't sound professional. A mobile phone would be fine as long as you answer "Super Cleaning" etc. You will need some way of getting the word out there. A web site these days is probably the cheapest and easiest way to do this. Once you've got your web site up you'll probably start getting some calls pretty soon.
